Keyboard

KeyboardKeyboard - 104 Key Keyboard

The keyboard is one of the ways that the computer user can enter information into the computer.  You type, the computer listens!  Every computer needs a keyboard.   It plugs into the back of the computer and your computer will not work without one.

The keyboard has several sections on it, alphabetic keys, function keys, action keys, and a numeric keypad.  A novice user will be able to get his or her way through a standard keyboard without too much trouble.   If you can find the "enter" key and the "escape" key then you are well on your way.

Some keyboards have a click sound, some are soft click.  Some have PS2 adapters and others have AT adapters.  Some are straight, like the one pictured above and others are split to create an ergonomic feel that matches the natural position of your hands.  We only recommend the ergonomic keyboard for those of you who really know how to type.  Hunt and peckers should stay away from this one!  Most of these features are personal preference.  The best thing to do is to take the time and check out a couple of keyboards and see which one feels best to you.

Analogy - The keyboard is the device by which you are able to talk to your computer.  It is the main method by which you may enter text information and numeric information into your computer system.

History - Keyboards have not changed a whole lot over the years.  Every few years a new idea comes along.   The ergonomic keyboard came out about 5 years ago, the 104 key keyboard with a Windows button came out about the same time, they now make keyboards with touchpads (you touch your finger on a pad to simulate the mouse pointer) and Internet and sound feature buttons.  Basically the primary purpose and the necessity of the keyboard have not changed through the years.

Manufacturers - AOpen, IBM, Logitech, Adesso etc.

What You Are Looking For - Again, you are looking for a keyboard that has the feel that you are comfortable with.   Other than comfort, there really are no major factors that differentiate keyboards.   If you wish, get the keyboard with the fancy buttons so that you can brag to your friends about how easy it is for you to connect to the Internet by clicking only one button!
