Hardware Guide

Introduction

We have written this guide for the novice computer user.  We will take you through the process of buying each part of your computer.  It is our belief that a well educated consumer is a consumer that will find the best value.

The following specifications are our recommendations for an IBM compatible personal computer system for the following uses:

  • home use
  • home-office use
  • business workstation use

These specifications are recommended as "best value" based on current market prices and typical needs of the three scenarios mentioned above.  Also, they are recommended as minimum specifications, if you find something that exceeds the specifications at a good price, then go for it!

We have broken this list down to each component of the computer  and listed them in the order of importance - in our opinion.  Next to each item is our current recommendation for a minimum specification. (as of September 2004)

Click on an item for a more in depth explanation of what it is, how it developed historically, and what to look for when you make a purchase.
